Incident - DDoS on legacy network infrastructure

What

A DDoS attack targeted a customer routed on legacy infrastructure. This infrastructure was not set up to accept our DDoS filtering policies and did not have sufficient capacity to handle the attack. This caused service impact for customers connected to our access routers in Doetinchem.

When

  • Start of incident: 2021-07-07 17:48:40 (CEST)
  • End of incident: 2021-07-07 18:51:00 (CEST)

Impact

  • Customers only present in OUM and DEL were completely unaffected by this incident.
  • During the incident, severe packet loss could be observed for the customers connected to the routers in Doetinchem.
  • For customers connected to the affected infrastructure, the network wasn't completely unreachable for the entire length of the incident. This means reports for 'flapping', but not completely down connections could also be related to this incident.

Improvements

  • We are now actively migrating customers away from the legacy infrastructure towards our new datacenters. This applies for all customers who do not require L1 or L2 connectivity in Doetinchem.
  • The capacity to the network backbone of the infrastructure in Doetinchem has been doubled, to better cope with large volumetric attacks.

Incident - PE router crash

When

On 12/05/2021 16:03:34 (CEST) our PE router in AMS experienced a software crash.

Impact

  • Customers in our DCv3 locations (DEL (recently upgraded) and OUM) location have remained online as traffic was immediately diverted away from the issue.
  • Customers in legacy locations (DCD and DCT) may (depending on configuration) have experienced a service interruption of 5 minutes with reduced connectivity for up to 25 minutes.

Improvements

In order to prevent this from recurring, extra care will be taken while applying new configuration. New configuration will be tested extensively and checked before being applied to production.

Upgrade - Core Routing Equipment

Today our core routing equipment was upgraded at our DEL location (near Rotterdam).

The new equipment will allow to increase the reliability and scale of the data center. Network latency has also been improved, all routes will now always get the shortest path possible through our network, cutting latency by 0.3ms (or about 35%) inside our network for (previously) not optimized routes.
